as long as you have two stop lamps either side of the car and there not obscured or effected by other lamps you should be fine as im not sure what you mean by ' mashed'! You dont need rev lights.

By mashed, I mean then have cut the housing to bits to (badly) fit a seperate bulb which touches the lense and has melted a nice dent into it now. I just can't fathom why they went to the effort, that's all!

I have a 65 bug, registered 26.04.1965. It's never had seat belts, at least I know over the last 10 years or so.

I am booked in for MOT and some light work next week and asked about the belts and they seemed to think that under current regulations a belt must be in the front that secures the top half of the body.

I have some lap belts but there aren't any holes in the floor pan to connect to, so if I need belts I want these to be fitted.....

a. do I need belts at all to pass MOT
b. will lap belts suffice if they are keeping with an original spec or do I need to put in some upper/across torso belts in?
c. the car has always passed MOT with no belts, that I know over the past 10 years or so?

thanks in advance.

hmm - that says most vehicles.

I need to know if lap belts are good enough as the garage seem to think they won't be compliant.

?

If your car has never had belts, it may be older than the stated age,as it stands all vehicles first used after 1/1/65 need at least a diagonal strap (lap belts not good enough). Personally, if someone came to me with a VW Birth Certificate showing a buid date ealier than 1965, I'd let it pass without belts.

You will need to prove that date of first use was before january 65 to claim a seat belt exemption. You/the car have probably been lucky the past years seeing as the MOT testers have not found any belts or mountings so have just let it slide. The VOSA MOT manual states it must have A belt which restrains the upper part of the body (but need not include a lap belt)

Check out the MOT manual on the DFT site.
