Ive got a sump plug sender and a gauge on the dash. Simple to wire. +ve lead to gauge from an ignition switched source, routed back to the engine and down to the sender. The sender creates the earth.

Hmm.

Thanks for the replies. Still not sure if I should get one, I may wait now as it'll be about £150 for a pressure and temperature gauge (with senders) from new. But then looking at ebay, £3.70 or £30 odd for the same thing, it may be cheaper than I thought? Is this one (in the link) the same as this one from Machine 7?

Then it'll be a task and a half to fit them (for me, I know for many it'll be perhaps a quick 30 min job).

I personnaly havent bothered with pressure. Unless your racing I wouldnt have thought it that important. I think someone else said, further up, 'regular oil changes' will suffice.

the m7 one is 5 bar ,the other is 10 bar so they need different gauges is all.
ive picked up all gauges and senders for my 2 v dubs cheap as off ebay so if your patient and look carefully they will come up.
its not a difficult job if you got wire, crimps and connectors and advice where to connect them to, still possibly a few hours work mind you

can someone tell me what the point is of having a sender located in the sump plug or dipstick? What does that give you that's useful?

The oil temperature.

(very handy to know on an air cooled engine with no other sort of temperature gauge)

Dave.

doesn't it need to be located in the flow though to give an accurate reading? And won't a sender in the sump plug be cooling with airflow as well?

In an ideal world, yes. (If you have a remote oil filter then that's probably the best place) In practice, the dipstick or in the side of the case (T3 dipstick blockoff plate) is pretty good. The oil is being flung around like mad in there, the overall temperature is pretty even.

In practice, it's more a case of "knowing your engine", knowing the sort of temperatures it normally runs at and using the gauge to pick up any problems - i.e. changes in temperature are more important than the actual exact reading.

Yes, most folk reckon they read around 10 C lower. But as above, the changes are more important. They're not scientific instruments.

Can also tee the sender off the stock oil pressure port. No mess, no fuss
